Erin Fehilly

Consignment and vintage shops are ubiquitous in Winnipeg. They're great not only for recycling and repurposing fashion, but also for giving people an opportunity to wear something unique. Just be prepared to dig. Erin Fehilly often takes the plunge into different consignment and second-hand stores, where she browses through hundreds of items in hopes of finding that one great piece. We caught Fehilly doing the "dig" at The Ruby Slipper Vintage Shop, where she told us, "I like the store because when you find something here, it's so much more special then when you find something else where there's six of them. Vintage shops are really great for the accessories, too."

What she wore...

COAT, HAT AND PURSE -- "Out of the Blue. I was required to wear clothes from there when I worked there so I accumulated a lot."

DRESS -- Winners

BELT -- Shout

TIGHTS -- Superstore

BOOTS -- "The boots are from Browns."

HEADSCARF -- The Ruby Slipper

RING -- "Rhymes With Orange in the Exchange District."

Fashion essential

"I wear a lot of dresses, even to school, and people are often like, 'Why are you so dressed up? Where are you going?' But you find that people just get used to you dressing a certain way, and then they're OK with it. You have to set the standard.

"I have quite a few really good blazers. If I'm wearing a dress I like to go a bit longer with the blazer but if I'm wearing a nice top and dark denim, I'll do something a bit more cropped so you can see the top. It's when you're so consumed with what you're wearing that people tend to do the wrong things."

Style inspiration

"My mom -- she dresses so well and is really put together. As a kid, I always found myself dressing like my mom and I tried to steer away from her colour schemes because I wanted to be my own person. I really like when other people wear bright clothes, but for me, I just really like rich, deep colours... My mom's clothes look really good on her body, which is something I learned... I don't even own a pair of skinny jeans because I don't think they look good on me."

Fashion tip

"A lot of times people will wear something just because it's in the media or it's become a fad but doesn't necessarily look the best on them. I'm not saying they don't look good -- and who am I to judge? -- but that's just how I feel about what I buy. I get clothes that fit my body type and I usually find I wear it for years. When I buy a dress that's trendy, I don't normally feel comfortable in it or it doesn't last me longer than a season."
