StreetStyle: Peter George

Traditionally, pocket squares have been worn as an accessory for men's formal attire since the beginning of the 20th century. A contemporary twist of the look has seen it paired with blazers and jeans to dress up a casual outfit. We admired the accessory on Peter George, as it brought his look up a notch and added a speck of colour that tied in well to the door behind him.

What he wore...

Blazer -- "I got this from Hanford Drewitt on Broadway."

Pocket square -- "I think I got that at Harry Rosen."

T-shirt and jeans -- "At Banana Republic in New York."

Shoes -- "The shoes are Steve Madden and I got them from Town Shoes in Polo Park."

Sunglasses -- "Sunglasses are prescription."

Leather portfolio -- "I think I got this at Staples or something like that, nothing fancy."

Fashion essential

"Black T-shirt. It goes with everything I own. I wear it with blazers, under a suit, with a sports jacket or just on its own. So it's probably my most common piece of clothing I own. They're usually stretchy with the same crew neckline. They fit pretty comfortably but they're not baggy. I probably bought this T-shirt about four years ago; I've got several of them and they just last forever.

Style inspiration

"The guy who was the sales manager at Harry Rosen for about 15 years in Winnipeg. His name is Can -- he's my style inspiration. He dresses very sharp and he's always wearing great suits and jackets and unusual colour combinations with pocket squares and ties. Nothing too outrageous, but he always looks really sharp. As long as I was going to buy something he'd offer his advice," says George with a laugh.

"I go to New York for fun once every year or so -- you go downtown and people are always dressed very sharply, especially during the work day."

Fashion tip

"Wear smaller clothes. You see a lot of guys that are wearing jackets that are way too big for them. It makes them look huge and it looks really out of style now. Men's jackets changed a few years ago; they made everything much smaller. If you're a 42, a 42 is going to be a lot smaller now then it was five years ago. Most people wear suits that are too big for them. So that's my tip."
