StreetStyle: Claire Pankiw

When we caught up with Claire Pankiw, she was heading to the University of Manitoba to attend a dress rehearsal for Black Hole Theatre's production of The Importance of Being Earnest, for which she is the house manager. The film studies student has the liberty to be creative in her style because of her choice of study. She told us that she thinks people are less judgmental in the arts towards fashion than they might be in another faculty. "I am definitely OK with being looked at -- it doesn't bother me," Pankiw says. She's very crafty; she knitted her scarf, and making her own jewelry has become a hobby; she made the clip on her hat from charms she bought at Michaels.

Tickets for the The Importance of Being Earnest are $12; it runs to Dec.1 at U of M's Black Hole Theatre.

What she wore...

HAT -- "It's from Topshop, (bought) when I was in Toronto."

GLASSES AND TIGHTS -- "They're from The Bay."

SCARF -- "I made it from yarn I got at Walmart."

EARRINGS -- "They were actually from a little second-hand shop in Ontario; I used to live there."

COAT -- Winners.

PURSE -- "It was from an aunt; she gave it to my mom. It has to be 10 years old."

BRACELETS -- "It was a long chain from Michaels, I just wrapped it around a few times."

BOOTS -- Aldo

Fashion essential

"Jewelry... it's just more fun that way. I like sparkly things. I always try to have some kind of flourish of colour going on. I don't like to wear anything that is boring."

Why do you make your jewelry, as opposed to buying it?

"I can decide what I like and what I want it to do... I've taken apart so many necklaces and put the charms on something else and done something else with the chain."

How about a fashion essential that is clothes-related; what would that be?

"I'd say hats. I have a lot of hats, average about 10. I wear a hat almost every day in the winter months."

Style inspiration

"The film Marie Antoinette. I'm studying film at University of Manitoba -- I've always had an interest in films. I find the actors stylish but also the whole film theme attracts me. Some other films at the top of my head would have to be Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. Anything by Colleen Atwood, who's an amazing costume designer; she always works with Tim Burton. I'm inspired by period pieces and anything that takes place in the '50s, as well. I love cinched waists, belts and A-line skirts."

Fashion tip

"Be proud of your body. Try to dress it up as much as you can."

What would be dressing up be to you?

"Wearing jewelry to add to your outfit."
