ERIC OLEK

The Winnipeg Fashion Incubator is an inspiring annual fashion market where you can shop for Canadian apparel, look at local designers' work and watch beautiful creations on the runway. The free event took place Dec. 1 at the Red River College Princess Street campus, and that's where we spotted Eric Olek, a fashion designer himself.

Olek had his own booth last year for his men's streetwear company called Friday Knights. This year he was handing out surveys for a raw denim brand he wants to launch next year.

When asked about the event Olek says, "The Fashion Incubator is full of a ton of good people; they are really knowledgeable and know a lot about fashion and I like to help out locals. It's a great place to meet people and get some nice stuff."

What he wore...

JACKET -- "Tip Top in Kildonan Place."

SCARF -- "My scarf is from Winners, Calvin Klein."

HAT AND JEANS -- "Ordnry Clothing just on McDermot. Jeans are WESC."

HOLSTERS (wrap-around upper-body bag) -- Winnipeg designer Lennard Taylor.

T-SHIRT -- "T-shirt I got in California."

SHOES -- "Jose & Markham Footwear on Princess."

BAG -- Nike from FootLocker.

Fashion essential

"A hat -- I have a ton of them. I think a hat spices up anything you wear. I have a few different ones; it's just something to stand out with. When people see me at work or they see me at school, even if I don't know them they'll ask, 'What's with the hat?' or 'What's with the holsters?' But it's those things that make me stand out."

What is with the holsters?

"I see Lennard Taylor (local designer) wearing them and I just wanted a pair."

What do you hold in them?

"Wallet and cellphone. I wear them all the time, even when I'm sleeping. I have cotton ones that I sleep on at night," says Olek jokingly.

Where would a typical guy wear

holsters in Winnipeg?

"You could wear them out to the bar, you could wear them to school, going to work. They spice up a dress shirt, they spice up a T-shirt."

Style inspiration

"I follow blogs, Instagram -- men's clothing related. One is called The Tailored Gentleman. I would say school and being around other people and taking in the culture our city has to offer is inspiring. I like to shop downtown -- it's old, it's colourful, you come down here and everyone has their own flair and great style."

Fashion tip?

"Stand out, accessorize with scarves, hats, watches and bracelets."
