Jodi Samms strolled down Osborne Street on a Monday afternoon with friends wearing a patterned, flowy summer dress and minimal accessories to beat the 32 C August heat. She's a high school teacher who says her fashion inspirations go back to her time working at Le Chateau and from trendy students at school. "My students keep me in style, in the loop and what's going on," she says.
What she wore...
Dress and belt -- Urban Behaviour
Watch -- "Michael Kors in Vegas last summer at the outlet. I was vacationing."
Sunglasses -- "I think they were $12 sunglasses from Aldo."
Purse -- Michael Kors, Winnipeg
Sandals -- Aldo
"My fashion essential would be my Michael Kors watch actually. It goes with everything and I love watches. This is my day-time watch, I have a night-time watch as well."
What is the difference?
"My night watch is more glitzy, it basically has rhinestones around it and the face is black and gold. They are both gold, I think it looks a lot more luxurious and fancy then silver. I also wear a lot of pencil skirts for work. I'm a teacher so it's important to look professional."
"Jennifer Aniston. I love looking through Michael Kors catalogues if I had a lot of money I would just shop there. I love the classic look, the fabrics and the quality. The other place I go to a lot is Dynamite. I find that they have clothes that are good for work and are age-appropriate, everything fits really well. When I shop, certain things catch my eye and I look for things that flatter my height because I'm shorter. So I try and find clothes that hit my body a certain way. I just bought this fabulous hot-pink blazer from Rickies' the other day. So I try and play off colours that go well with dark skin and use jewel tones. I try and be trendy and then mix things together... I get super-nice high-end pieces and then thrifty inexpensive items and mix them together. I actually used to work at Le Chateau in Polo Park, it was the best place to work because at staff meetings we would go through magazines and you had to make a storyboard... People would come in and say, 'This is what I'm doing this is where I'm going. And you'd have to look at there body shape and pick things out."
"Well I've found with me, I like to wear blazers with jeans, but its really important for the button on the blazer to hit at a certain place and the shoulders to hit at a certain place... Be choosy because it could look too boxy or long."
Can you look trendy teaching?
"Definitely. Sometimes students will be wearing certain trends and I had one student who wore a goregous shirt and I asked her where she got it and then I go buy the same thing... My students keep me in style and in the loop and what's going on. I play off the students fashion senses and they give me suggestions."
