Lindsay Johnston

Singer, songwriter and business student Lindsay Johnston told us, "Don't underestimate the power of long johns." The recent windchill warnings prove that layering is key in winter. Keeping yourself warm is an obvious reason, but layering will also help you to stay stylish. Johnston does so with cardigans underneath her jacket, long johns under her pants and big scarves that wrap around her neck.

Johnston hopes a foundation in business will help to market herself creatively in the music world. With rosy cheeks, this week's StreetStyle subject posed for a few quick shots before dashing off to work on a Tuesday afternoon.

What she wore...

COAT -- "It's from Jacob Polo Park."

SCARF -- "Value Village, my mom actually got it and I just steal it from her."

EARRINGS -- Forever 21.

HOODIE -- "It was just left at my house, I have no idea, just a friend's hoodie."

LEGGINGS - "These are my sister's, I have no idea where she got them from."

BOOTS - Aldo

BAG - "This is just a RW & Co. bag, I'm just carrying my lunch and my work clothes."

MITTS - "They're my dad's mitts that I stole from him."

Fashion essential

"Probably my boots, they make an outfit look somewhat polished. I wear big socks and long johns and that keeps me warm. I love the colour and if they ever get salt stains they manage to erase themselves."

Style inspiration

"I'm a singer/songwriter, and currently finishing up an album I recorded. The album doesn't have a name right now but it's going into mixing and mastering fairly soon. I love songwriting and getting my creative juices out that way. I love Fleetwood Mac, Feist, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. And then I also love indie bands around the city.

"Music and fashion definitely go hand-in-hand because I like to take a certain thing or idea and feed off that inspiration. Whether it's an outfit or whether it's a song lyric it'll then turn into a song. I love going thrift-shopping with my sister and finding pieces I can work into my wardrobe into a modern way. Usually I'll look for something oversized and see if it looks good with a belt. I have a lot of cute little belts I pair with stuff. That's my thing, finding pieces from Value Village or the Goodwill."

Fashion tip

"Don't underestimate the power of long johns underneath your clothes. You can wear them under your pants, make yourself look polished but keeping yourself warm that way."
