Vogue like a voyageur
You can be warm and Manitoba marvellous at the festival in locally made cold-weather gear
He Ho! It's the last weekend to discover your joie de vivre at this year's Festival du Voyageur and I say what better way to do it than with a touch of frost-fighting fabulous flair and snow-stopping style that will leave even the burliest fur trader saying va-va-va-voom.
In honour of my favourite 'Peg-city winter fest -- OK the only winter festival that I'm aware of -- I thought it would be fun to share my favourite Manitoba-made fashion picks to keep you toasty warm from head to toe as you sip Caribou while challenging your amis to a round of Clou'Donc.
Pour votre tete -- If there is one must-have fashion item to keep Jack Frost at bay, it's the fur hat -- and how stylishly appropriate for a festival that celebrates the fur trade. I adore the Russian fur hats by Crown Cap. This luxurious hat is the perfect topper for even the most discerning fashionista.
Pour vos orteils -- For your feet, a pair of Julie Pedersen designer muckies. Made from soft suedes, cozy furs and adorned with metallic leathers and hardware, these urban booties will let you jig in style all night long.
Pour vos mains -- Seriously, nothing says Winnipeg warm better than a pair of Raber Gloves Garbage Mitts, which I may add come in jet black. Classic hue, classic style, classic Winnipeg.
Pour votre corps -- While some may argue Canada Goose is not a Manitoba company -- the iconic parka brand is, in fact, manufactured right here in the 'Peg, so technically speaking they are in fact Manitoba-made. This winter essential has come a long way since its Expedition model to now include coats cinched at the waist and cleverly contoured for women.
Last but not least, celebrate Festival du Voyageur in true voyageur style with a Ceinture fléchée. This colourful sash was used by fur traders to support their backs as they hauled their season's catch to the nearest post.
Today, you can wear them in the traditional way -- around the waist or my preferred fashionista way, layered around my neck as a stylish scarf. The clever peeps who run the festival are even selling a headband version for the urban 20-something hipster.
