Wayne Clark named first distinguished designer-in-residence at Ryerson

TORONTO - Wayne Clark is heading back to school to dispense his design wisdom to budding fashion talents at Ryerson University.

The renowned Canadian womenswear designer has been appointed as the Toronto university's first distinguished designer-in-residence for a one-year term.

Clark will work closely with fashion school chair Robert Ott as well as with fourth-year design students on their final-year collection design boards.

He will also partner with other faculty members in the school of fashion in providing guest lectures to all fashion students.

The Alberta-born designer trained at both the Alberta College of Art and Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont., before heading to London where he apprenticed with Savile Row couturier Sir Hardy Amies, as well as Ossie Clark.

The Calgary native is well-known for his glamorous evening gowns and well-tailored women's sportswear, with Rihanna, Jane Fonda, Cindy Crawford and Sarah Polley among the notable names who have worn his designs.

"Clark's influence in the Canadian fashion industry has been immeasurable. His talent, passion, and dedication provide an excellent model for young talented designers to aspire to," Ott said in a release on Tuesday.
