We're romantic -- sort of -- Amazon survey finds

GOOD (or lukewarm) news for you lovers in Winnipeg: We are a (sort of) romantic town, kind of.

On Tuesday, online retailer Amazon.ca released its list of the top 20 most romantic spots in Canada. Winnipeg landed at a respectable No. 9, sandwiched between Edmonton and London, Ont. Saskatoon nabbed the top spot.

The rankings were drawn from Amazon sales, per 100,000 population, of bodice-rippin' novels, sex and relationship books, romantic comedy DVDs and Michael Bublé CDs.

That last part wasn't a joke, by the way. "Michael Bublé is a fantastic Canadian singer, known for his smooth voice," Amazon spokeswoman Sarah Gelman helpfully explained. "Since there is no category in music that is specifically romantic, we identified a Canadian singer we thought embodied romance."

It could be even more cheesecake: Amazon's U.S. rankings used Barry White.

So, why are we a nice, middling level of romantic? Could it be because the warm 'n' squishies keep us warm on these long February nights?

"It's the weather!" offers Love Nest Boutique owner Linda Zuzanski. "And the fact that most cities don't have classy, friendly stories like ours. But the weather is the most important thing."

Other cold cities Calgary, Regina, Edmonton, Ottawa, Thunder Bay and Sudbury also cracked the top 20 list.
