Former Bomber kicker sold on Scion
For Troy Westwood, the Scion xB is the perfect fit for his family.
"My wife, Janet, and I have four children at home and we do a lot of driving," says the popular former Winnipeg Blue Bomber punter and place kicker, now co-host of TSN Radio 1290's "The Big Show".
"I like the fact that the Scion is built on a Toyota body, while Janet really likes the lines on the model. Function is a huge issue for me. For Janet, the aesthetic appearance is important. We both love the black leather interior."
Westwood became the first Winnipegger to take possession of a Scion from the city's new Crown Toyota Scion dealership (formerly Sunshine Toyota) at the Waverley Auto Mall.
"It's nice to see someone like Troy, who is so well known for his work in the community, put his faith in our new Scion," said Glen Daman, president of the Dilawri Auto Group, of which Crown Toyota Scion is a part.
"We hope that he and his family will be very happy driving our product, and we look to Troy being an ambassador for Scion in the community." Westwood's model, the Scion xB is powered by a 2.4 litre 4-cylinder DOHC engine which produces 158 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The model with automatic transmission gets 9.5 L per 100 km (30 mpg) in city driving and 7.2 L per 100 km (39 mpg) on the highway.
A branch of Toyota, the 10-year-old Scion brand specializes in affordable models that owners can personalize with different accessories. For Westwood, the Dilawri Auto Group's G.A.S. Performance division equipped his new model with 18-inch wheels and tires and other accessories.
The xB sells for a starting price of $18,860. There are four other models in the Scion line-up, including the two-seat iQ micro subcompact, the xD, the tC and the sporty FR-S.
Crown Toyota Scion sales rep Zac Friesen said the dealership, which moved into its new building in mid-March, has written about a dozen orders so far. "There's been a fair amount of interest in all of the Scion models," he added.
Kirk Cancilla new Crown Acura general sales manager
It didn't take long for Kirk Cancilla to get back into the auto business.
Cancilla had been an integral part of his family's European-import dealership for more than 20 years. Last year, the family sold the dealership to an auto group. Cancilla stayed on for a few more months but parted company with the new ownership early in the year.
"It was time for a change," he said. "But I wanted to take some time off to spend with my wife and family before pursuing other options."
Cancilla intended to wait at least until April 1, after spring break, to get back into the industry, but opportunity knocked a bit sooner.
"In mid-March, my long-time friend, Glen Daman, called me and told me the Dilawri Group had a management position they needed to fill right away," Cancilla said. "One thing led to another and I started at Crown Acura on Wednesday, March 27."
Cancilla said he's enjoying the opportunity to work for a large auto group as a change from a smaller, family-owned business. The Dilawri Auto Group also operates Crown Nissan and Winnipeg Honda on Waverley, Crown Mazda on west Portage near the Perimeter and Crown Honda on north McPhillips.)
"I have the entire Dilawri Auto Group range of vehicles to draw on," he said. "We also have a pool of 500 used vehicles compared to 35 where I was before. That's a big difference.
"I have sold tons of cars, including high-end models, during my career. Acura is a luxury brand and I have dealt with a luxury clientele most of my life."
The Crown Acura position came open after former general sales manager Peter von Stackelberg moved to the new Toyota Scion store as part of the expanded management team.
"I'm excited to be moving to the bigger store," said von Stackelberg, who served as Crown Acura general sales manager for the past two years.
