Audi, says St. James Audi sales rep Jeff Harochaw, is the best-selling luxury brand in the world and the fastest-growing luxury vehicle in Canada. And with the recent arrival of four new TDI diesel alternatives, he expects brisk sales to continue.
Audi was already offering a TDI diesel option in its A3 and Q7 models. At the beginning of June, that option also became available in the A8 model, followed in early July by the arrival of the first A6, A7 and top-selling Q5 TDI diesel models at the Century Street dealership.
"The TDI system reduces emissions by 95 per cent," Harochaw said, noting that the all the newly-arrived models are powered by 3.0-litre V6 TDI clean diesel engines. This plant produces 240 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque in the A6 and A7 diesel model sedans and 240 hp with 406 lb.-ft. of torque in the A8 sedan. The Q5 TDI diesel crossover generates 245 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque.
The base price for the Q5 TDI diesel is $48,700 (plus freight and TDI), $63,400 for the new A6, $72,900 for the A7 and $93,000 for the A8.
"Audi has added an electric supplementary heater to the vehicles so there is no problem with temperature," Harochaw said. "The've thought of everything,"
He added that sales of the popular Q5 in its diesel version have been strong. "We just have one left."
Earl Edmondson open for business in Headingley
Earl Edmondson is a well-known figure in Manitoba's vehicle industry, running his own new and used-car dealerships and working as a buyer for Murray Auto Group during his lengthy career.
Recently, the past-president of the Manitoba Used Car Dealers Association moved his Edmondson Auto Sales outlet in Headingley to a spot beside Dawson Performance Garage at 4251 Portage Avenue. .
"We sell everything, but trucks, vans and SUVs are most in demand," Edmondson said. "Sales have been very good. Word-of-mouth has been strong."
The dealership has a constant inventory of about 40 vehicles in the $3,000 to $12,000 price range and spanning 2000-2010 model years. Although Edmondson is working on his own, he has an arrangement with neighbour Barry Dawson -- they cover for each other and Edmondson's customers can bring their vehicles to Dawson for servicing.
West Park Motors raises money for Altona skate park
Ray Loewen, president of West Park Motors in Altona, is asking readers to help the GM dealership raise money in support of a new skate park in the southern Manitoba community.
Loewen said the skate park, now under construction on property donated by the Town of Altona, is slated to cost $250,000 to build.
"The group spearheading the project has raised about $200,000 to date, and is hoping to raise the remaining funds prior to the park's completion in about five weeks," he said. "We started a promotion on July 30 in an effort to help fund the skate park."
Loewen is asking readers to dial up the dealership's Facebook page and register a Like. "For every Like we get on our Facebook page, West Park will donate $10 to the park," he said. "We supply the cash, skaters get family and friends to like us on Facebook, and everyone wins."
West Park's goal is to raise $10,000 for the skate-park campaign. "We see this as a great opportunity to have some fun, support a good cause and hopefully help the skate park get $10,000 closer to paying off their new digs."
The dealership also supports other community projects, including Gardens on Tenth, a $15-million seniors' complex that is nearing the start of construction, and The Field of Dreams, a first-class baseball facility now being built in the northwest corner of Altona.

Leading used-car dealers win Top Choice Awards
Congratulations to Nott Autocorp and Auto Gallery, which have earned 2013 Top Choice Awards.
For Auto Gallery, It's the fourth time in the past five years that the pre-owned vehicle dealership has won the honour.
"The Top Choice Award is based on repeat and referral business," said Gord Pedersen, whose industry-leading used-car dealership earlier this year received its sixth Consumer's Choice Award in the past seven years.
Pedersen and partner Dan Gagnon were both seasoned auto sales reps when they founded Auto Gallery at Portage near the Perimeter in 2002.
Last fall, to handle an ever-increasing customer demand, Gagnon and Pedersen opened a second location across the street from their original lot at 3777 Portage.
Pedersen gives all the credit for Auto Gallery's success to the dealership's long-serving staff. "Our staff works hard every day to make sure that our customers are happy with our service and their purchases," he said. "We've had very little turnover."
For the first two years that the national Top Choice Award was given out, Auto Gallery was the only auto dealer in Canada, new or used, to be recognized. But this year, it's been joined at the podium by Nott Autocorp, which was voted Top Luxury Car Dealership for Winnipeg.
Trevor Nott founded the dealership on DeVries Road, just off Lagimodiere at the north Perimeter Highway, in 2007 after working in the financial end of the business for General Motors dealerships for 15 years. He started with two employees, Barry Swain (who is now general manager) in sales and one technician.
Today, Nott Autocorp has a staff of 20 and specializes in luxury imports and custom-ordering for customers who want specific makes and models.
The Top Choice Award is based on quality service, value and professionalism. Surveys are conducted in 11 cities across Canada to identify and promote businesses and professionals who stand above the competition and have earned their customers' trust.
