Joe Bryksa was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied photojournalism at Red River College in Winnipeg and began his career in the mid-1980s at community and other newspapers in the city.

He has worked as a staff photographer at the Winnipeg Free Press since 1994.

His photojournalism has been recognized nationally by several organizations including the National Newspaper Awards, News Photographers Association of Canada, Western Canadian News Photographers Association, the Hillman Foundation, the Canadian Association of Journalists, The Canadian Press, the Canadian Farm Writers Federation and the Jockey Club of Canada.
