Police say the man killed in a highway crash this afternoon was a 66-year-old Winnipegger.His name is not being released, police said in a news release this evening.
He was driving a westbound minivan on Highway 1 east of Portage la Prairie shortly after noon, when it crossed the median ditch and ran head-on into an eastbound pickup truck towing a camper trailer.
The 61-year-old driver of the pickup truck is from Ste. Anne who was taken to Portage General Hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening, RCMP said in a news release. His spouse, the passenger, was airlifted to Winnipeg and was listed in stable condition, police said.
The crash happened about one kilometre west of the Shell Station on Highway 1 near Portage la Prairie.
That section of the highway was blocked off while emergency workers tended to the scene. RCMP said it has now re-opened.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, police said.
