Dane Pischke, a fifth-year right side hitter with the University of Manitoba Bisons men's volleyball team, has been named the Canada West nominee for the prestigious Dale Iwanoczko Student-Athlete Award.

Pischke, 22, was also named a Canada West first-team all-star on Friday while teammate and middle hitter Kenny Rooney, 18, was named the Canada West men's volleyball rookie of the year for the 2012-2013 season.

Middle Brendan Black, 20, of the Winnipeg Wesmen was named a second-team all-star.

The 6-foot-7 Pischke, the Bisons co-captain, was eighth in conference points at 4.09 per game 11th in Canada West in kills at 3.40 per game. Pischke, the first Bisons player to be named as the Iwanoczko award nominee, is a four-time CIS academic all-Canadian who has a GPA of 3.61 in Accounting/Finance. Iwanoczko was a former Bisons player and academic all-Canadian who earned his degree in medicine before succumbing to Hodgkin's disease in 1998 at the age of 30.

"Dane is an outstanding student in our Faculty of Management plus is an great athlete, competitor and teammate," Bisons men’s volleyball head coach Garth Pischke, also Dane's father, said in a statement.

"He has been involved in community service his whole life and totally understands the benefits and rewards of giving back to the community. The greatest compliment I can give Dane is that he comes as close to the type of individual and human being that Dale Iwanoczko was while blending and excelling in all three components of this award."

Rooney is the fourth Bisons player to win the conference rookie award (Chris Komishon 2010-11, Chris Voth 2008-2009, Toon van Lankvelt 2002-03). The 6-foot-7 Rooney was sixth in conference hitting percentage at .389 and fifth in Canada West blocks with 1.28 per set.

For Winnipeg, Black led the Wesmen with 95 total blocks which was sixth in the conference.
