Windshield crack forces emergency landing

WINNIPEG — A plane en route from Toronto to Vancouver had to make an emergency landing in Winnipeg this afternoon after a crack in the pilot’s windshield forced the plane to land.

Air Canada flight 169 landed without incident at the James Richardson International Airport around 2:21, airport spokeswoman Christine Alongi said.

Pilots of the Airbus A320 notified the airport that they had to make an emergency landing around 2:12 p.m.

There were 152 passengers on board.

About 30 of those passengers were able to get on other flights to Vancouver, while the rest had to wait while a replacement plane was brought in from Toronto, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said.

Those who had to wait in Winnipeg are already back in the air, she said.

Meanwhile, it’s still unclear what caused the crack in the windshield.

"It does not happen often," Mah said, adding that windshields are multi-layered, and diverting to the nearest airport when a one cracks is standard procedure. "The aircraft is now out of service and our maintenance and technical teams are looking at it."
