Two paramedics in the ambulance also suffered serious injuries, and one is listed in critical condition.

The man was heading south in a 2006 Kia Spectra when it appears the vehicle crossed over the centre line and into the path of the ambulance, RCMP say.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the ambulance was transported to hospital in Winnipeg with critical injuries. The second paramedic and a patient in the rear of the ambulance were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency crews had to extract occupants of both vehicles, according to an RCMP press release.

An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst assisted with the investigation, and the highway remained closed to traffic until about 11 p.m.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the collision at this time, RCMP say.
