OTTAWA -- It was a diplomatic posting with roots going back almost two years to the shores of Hudson Bay.

Premier Gary Doer and Prime Minister Ste­phen Harper were in a private plane in October 2007, headed north to make a joint fundraising announcement for the Port of Churchill, when Doer casually mentioned his plan to retire after 10 years.
