Arlington Street house gutted by fire

WINNIPEG — A small North End home was gutted by fire over the noon hour.

Firefighters arrived at the1700 block of Arlington Street to find a small home totally engulfed in flames.

Platoon Chief Brian Somers said firefighters attempted to get inside the home but were driven back by thick smoke and intense heat.

Somers said there was fire in the basement and the main floor, but officials didn't yet know the cause.

He was unable to provide an estimated value on the damage. The 92-year-old house, 672 square feet, has an assessed value of $110,000.

"Damage was extensive," Somers said. "It may be a total loss."

Residents from homes on both sides of the fire were evacuated as a precaution.

Police closed Arlington Street between Mountain Avenue and Church Avenue while they were battling the blaze.

Wow....take a freaking chill pill......it was said earlier that two elderly persons suffered smoke inhalation. Jeeze!

How about we stop quibbling about irrelevant details? I pass by this home frequently and am very sad about it. I have been told that two cats died in the fire and that the homeowners had left the home for a very short time only to return to in in ruins and everything gone. How devastating.

Can we help these people out with donations of clothing or anything else? What can the community do?

The elderly people may have been residents who lived next door. Ever think of that??

twinfield..there was an earlier article that said there were 2 elderly people in the home....so debbadoo is right in hoping they are O.K. Maybe the freepress removed that part?

@debbadoo
there were no elderly people there! where did you get this information? The owners of the home are middle-aged (max). The home is 92 years old, but other than that, there is no "elderly" anything involved here. Please be careful about mis-information, it can be very damaging (although not likely in this case)

I hope the two elderly people will be OK.
