Authorities warn of sex offender's release

  • Print

Winnipeggers are being warned about a sex offender being released from jail who is considered a high risk to re-offend.

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit, a joint unit of the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP, said today that Winston George Thomas, 35, will be released from the Headingley Correctional Centre on Sunday.

The unit says Thomas is expected to live in Winnipeg.

Thomas has numerous criminal convictions including two counts of sexual assault.

While Thomas took some sex offender treatment programs in jail, he is considered a high risk to re-offend and women of all ages are being warned they "are at risk of sexual violence".

Thomas committed a sexual act with a 13-year-old girl in March 2007, after he and two other men met her at a Winnipeg shopping centre. He was sentenced to two years less a day followed by three years of probation. His latest sentence was for other unrelated convictions.

The public is being warned not to take vigilante action against Thomas.
