AutoBin neighbourhoods switch to new garbage carts this week

Residents in the old AutoBin area of the city will start using their automated garbage and recycling carts this week.

The city started removing 5,800 AutoBins at the end of July, and it is expected the remaining 2,300 bins will be off the street by early next week. The removal of the bins initially prompted residents and contractors to rush to dispose of bulky items, causing a huge spike in the volume of trash.

Winnipeg solid waste manager Darryl Drohomerski said the amount of trash has decreased and crews are back on track with the collection schedule. He said all AutoBins have been removed from Point Douglas, and most are gone from areas north of Jarvis Avenue and west of Main Street. Drohomerski said residents in the former AutoBin neighbourhoods will have now a set day of the week for their garbage and recycling collection.

He reminded Winnipeggers in other parts of the city not to use their garbage and recycling carts until Oct. 1, when the new service will start elsewhere in the city.
