Average weekly earnings in Manitoba jump to $823.84

WINNIPEG — Average weekly earnings in Manitoba increased at the second fastest pace in the country in March, according to new Statistics Canada data released today.

The agency said earnings for non-farm payroll employees — people who work for someone as opposed to being self employed — jumped by two per cent to $823.84 from $807.43 in February.

The year-over-year improvement was 2.7 per cent — sixth largest among the provinces.

The only province to post a bigger month-to-month increase was Prince Edward Island, at three per cent.

The March gain allowed Manitoba to leap-frog over Quebec to sixth spot on the provincial earnings ladder. Alberta is in top spot, at $1,056.87 per week.

StatsCan said the number of payroll employees in the province also grew in March, climbing by 0.3 per cent to 570,500 from 568,700 in February. That was the fourth largest percentage gain among the provinces.

The yearly increase was 1.8 per cent, also fourth largest among the provinces.

Nationally, Canada also saw its payroll employment grow by 0.3 per cent to 15.08 million from 15.03 million in February. The year-over-year gain was 1.5 per cent.

Average weekly earnings in Canada rose at less than half the Manitoba pace, climbing by 0.8 per cent to $888.34 from $881.48 in February. But the year-over-year gain was bigger, at 2.1 per cent.
