Backup QB Elliott likely out for the season with knee injury

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback situation took another big hit today.

The CFL club announced that back-up QB Joey Elliott suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the 21-20 loss to the Calgary Stampeders Thursday night. He will require surgery and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

"It's extremely unfortunate to have my season cut short with this injury," Elliott said through a team spokesman Saturday. "I'm going to miss stepping into the huddle and look forward to getting back at it next season."

Elliott suffered the injury when making a tackle on Stamps DB Keon Raymond in the fourth quarter of the game. Raymond, who was returning a fumble, awkwardly fell into Elliott's legs, causing the injury.

Elliott did leave the field under his own power and did finish the game. He was seen badly limping around the Bombers office complex Friday afternoon.

The injury leaves the Bombers with three quarterbacks right now: Buck Pierce, Alex Brink, and rookie Brandon Summers.

Pierce, who's been banged around hard through the first three weeks of the season and is currently suffering through a bruised quad muscle, is the only pivot with significant CFL experience.

Pierce is day-to-day with the leg injury. He hopes to play against Toronto Saturday.
