Mark McKinney, writer/producer on the show Less Than Kind, will co-host a benefit for cast member Mike O'Brien, who is battling cancer.

Officially, Thursday night’s Less Than Kind event at the Winnipeg Art Gallery is a benefit for cast member Mike O’Brien, who is battling cancer.

Unofficially, according to the evening’s co-host Mark McKinney, it’s an attempt to best the benefit the series Corner Gas held for O’Brien in November in Regina.

"We’re not going to be too aggressive about it, like, ‘You guys are gonna regret the day you held a benefit for Mike O’Brien,’" McKinney jokes on the phone from Toronto.

O’Brien, 47, played Dog River businessman Wes Humboldt on Corner Gas and plays Lorne Goldstein, the father to Brooke Palsson’s character Miriam on Less Than Kind. A longtime Regina resident, O’Brien moved to Winnipeg six years ago and is now married with a young son. Last summer, he was diagnosed with an aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma and had undergone aggressive chemotherapy.

McKinney says the evening, which goes from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. will include screenings of the first two episodes of Less Than Kind Season 3 in advance of the show’s season première on HBO on Sunday.

McKinney, who will be co-hosting the event with Al Rae, says the evening will also include a raffle. Prizes include Jets tickets, HBO boxed set DVDs and a walk-on role in an upcoming episode of Less Than Kind, which is currently prepping to begin Season 4 in the spring.

The show will also feature performances by Keith and Renee and Brooke Palsson.

Tickets are $30 and are available online at www.buffalogalpictures.com/mikeobrien.html.
