Be a Santa to a Senior program launched

Christmas isn’t just for kids. The Winnipeg Home Instead Senior Care office this morning launches the Be a Santa to a Senior program at the Victoria General Hospital.

It collects and distributes gifts to seniors, a news release said. In the last three years, the program has delivered almost 1,000 gifts to Winnipeg seniors. Seniors’ gift requests are expected to rise as they struggle to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

Throughout North America, the program has attracted upwards of 65,000 volunteers during the past seven years, distributing 1.5 million gifts to more than 750,000 seniors, the news release said.

This year in Winnipeg, Victoria General Hospital, Victoria General Hospital Foundation, Victoria Lifeline, Holy Rosary and The Brick are taking part in the program.

Before the holiday season, nonprofit organizations identify isolated and "deserving" seniors and provide those names to the local Home Instead Senior Care office at 581 Sargent Ave., the release said. For more information go to www.beasantatoasenior.ca.
