Bear spray used in two robberies on the weekend
WINNIPEG — Police are asking the public for help to track down four suspects in a car jacking that took place in the North End this weekend — one of two robberies where bear spray was used as a weapon.
In one, a motorist reported being attacked at a red light near Redwood Avenue and Arlington Street by three men and one woman who swarmed his vehicle and robbed him.
The victim told police he pulled up for a red light at about 7:25 a.m. Sunday saw the four approach, surrounding his vehicle.
One suspect smashed the rear window and pulled out a can of bear spray and demanded the property inside.
The motorist handed over cash, ID and a speaker box.
The robbers took off on foot with the goods. The victim was not injured.
The other robbery took place Saturday night.
Another three suspects used bear spray, this time to force their way into an apartment in the 200 block of McGregor Street.
Officers answered a 911 call about 8:15 p.m. where a man, 50, reported being physically assaulted in the chest area and bear sprayed.
A police investigation revealed the three broke into the apartment, armed with a knife and the bear spray assaulted the victim and took off without taking anything of value.
The victim was treated for minor upper body injuries, including the effects caused by the bear spray.
All three suspects were described as aboriginal in appearance, between 18 and 24 years of age, 5-feet-10 to 6-feet tall, and wearing dark clothing.
The police also released the descriptions of the suspects in the car jacking.
Suspect 1 -- Male, aboriginal in appearance, early 20s approximately 5-foot-6 tall, skinny build, clean shaven, wearing a black baseball cap with white LA log, white puffy jacket and in possession of what appeared to be bear spray.
Suspect 2 -- Female, aboriginal in appearance, mid to late teens, approximately 5-feet tall, skinny build, shoulder length dark hair, wearing a green hoodie and a black toque.
Suspect 3 and 4 - Male, aboriginal in appearance, early 20s and wearing dark clothing.
Officers with District 3 Crime are handling the investigation. And anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
