Bezmozgis among guests at Tarbut culture festival

The riches of contemporary Jewish arts, music and performance will be showcased in Tarbut: Festival of Jewish Culture at the Rady Jewish Community Centre, Nov. 17-25.

Guests on this year’s lineup include author David Bezmozgis (The Free World), comedian Rachel Feinstein (Last Comic Standing), the Hadar Noiberg Middle Eastern Jazz Trio, Yemen Blues, and a Rockin’ Chanukah Concert featuring entertainer Rick Recht.

Local talent includes Glenn Buhr’s Broken Songs Band performing Before and After Graceland: A Tribute to Paul Simon. Former Winnipegger Sandy Krawchenko Altner presents music and memories of the early days in Winnipeg’s North End with her program Fiddler in the Golden Land, inspired by her bestselling book Ravenscraig.

The festival also includes two film screenings: Hava Nagila: The Movie and Little Rose (Róeyczka).

"From visual arts, to music to literature and films we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the incredible artistic talents found in our community and beyond at Tarbut", festival director Tamar Barr says. "We are so pleased that we have been able to program a week that contains such high-calibre entertainment for our audiences."

Last year’s Tarbut Festival attracted more than 3,000 people. The success of last’s year’s visual arts component prompted a new exhibit of Winnipeg Jewish artists, including Caroline Dukes, Leonard Marcoe, Shoshana Shalev-Minuk, and Elana El. This exhibit will culminate with a discussion entitled "Jewish Art or Art made by Jews?" by curator Amy Karlinsky and a silent auction with proceeds to the Rady JCC.
