Big hitter West returning to Goldeyes

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have locked up one of their big bats and familiar faces.

Fish manager Rick Forney announced today that outfielder Kevin West would be returning after spending the spring with the Cincinnati Reds.

The return of West, 30, means the Goldeyes now have 25 players on their roster, 13 of whom are position players.

A career .278 hitter in 11 minor-league seasons, West has been dynamite with the Goldeyes in his two seasons, batting .300 in 188 games with 37 home runs and 140 RBI. His 37 dingers are the most for a Goldeyes hitter over two seasons since Sean Hearn hit 39 in 1998-99.

As the Goldeyes welcomed back West, they were also continuing to tinker with their roster as outfielder Carlos Sosa had his rights traded to St. George of the Golden League for cash and a player to be named later.

Training camp opens May 4 at Canwest Park.
