Birthday party held for Portage and Main

Where was the party?

Right where it should have been.

Portage and Main had its 150th birthday party afterall.

And everyone was invited.

Julie Dagostine, of Creswin Properties Inc.  said Creswin decided to hire a band and serve cake over the lunch hour Friday in the courtyard of 201 Portage Ave. She said the decision was made after learning Thursday that the corner's big birthday is Saturday. No one, not even the city, was planning to celebrate the occasion.

The courtyard in front of 201 Portage, where the celebration was held Friday, is located on the same northwest corner where pioneer business man Henry McKenney opened a general store that became the seed from which the intersection bloomed. McKenney's far-sighted deal to purchase the property was completed on June 2, 1862.

The city's tallest building, 201 Portage, is located there now. Creswin has its office in the building and manages the property.
