Blowing snow makes for poor highway conditions; temperatures to drop

It will start cold this morning and only get colder as the weekend progress, says Environment Canada.

Blowing snow is causing poor visibility for rural drivers this morning. Highways are also snow-packed and slippery after several centimetres of snow fell overnight.

The TransCanada Highway from Headingley to almost Carberry is snow-covered with poor visibility. Highways running east to the Whiteshell have drifting snow but slightly better visibility. Most roads are at least partly covered with snow.

Winnipeggers woke up to a temperature of about -18 Celsius that will fall to -22 C by this afternoon. Winds will pick up, gusting from 40 to 60 km/h, with an average windchill of -35.

The overnight low will reach -29 C. Skies on Sunday will clear by noon but a high of -20 C will be accompanied by strong north winds, for a wind chill of -34.

Monday's high will be -27 C and the low -30 C, and similar temperatures are forecast for the rest of the week.
