Body buried at landfill: family

Family of one of alleged serial killer Shawn Lamb’s victims said police told them Tanya Nepinak’s body is buried at a city landfill.

Gail Nepinak, Tanya Nepinak’s sister, said police told her and other family members her sister’s body was dumped in a garbage bin in the West End and is now at the Brady Road Landfill.

"We don’t want her left over there," Gail Nepinak said Tuesday. "She’s a human being. She’s my sister."

Nepinak said police told them about the location two weeks ago. They took the family members and aboriginal elders to an area of the landfill where they believe the body was dumped, she said, adding police gave them time to pray there and reflect.

She said they were told by police it would cost between half a million and one million dollars to search the area for the body, which she said was located in an area about the size of a football field.

Since they visited the landfill on Aug. 2, Nepinak said police have not mentioned anything about a possible search for the body.

"We take it as they’re not going to do anything," she said.

A Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson said Tuesday they were not aware of the situation and could not comment.

Lamb, a 52-year-old drifter and career criminal, was charged with three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Lorna Blacksmith, Carolyn Sinclair and Tanya Nepinak.

The body of Sinclair, 25, was found in March in a Dumpster in a back lane near Notre Dame Avenue and Toronto Street. The body of Blacksmith, 18, was discovered near a Dumpster and wrapped in plastic.

Nepinak, 31, was last seen around Sherbrook Street and Ellice Avenue on Sept 13. Her body has not been found.
