Police recovered a body from the Red River this morning near Waterfront Drive but it’s not clear yet whether it belongs to a Winnipeg mother missing since her two children were found dead Wednesday.
Police were called to the waterfront near the Provencher Bridge Saturday morning at about 9:30 a.m. Emergency crews included the city’s water rescue team and the identification unit.
The body was recovered near a small dock in Stephen Juba Park, which was cordoned off by yellow police tape for much of the morning.
Many canoes and kayaks were on the river at the time as part of a paddling event. Paddlers, many of them teenagers, could be seen hugging and crying as policed worked to pull the body from the water.
Winnipeg police have not yet confirmed details of the deceased person’s identity.
Police have been searching for Lisa Gibson, 32, since her toddler and infant were found unresponsive in a bathtub in the family’s Westwood home. It’s believed she fled on foot and was wearing only pyjamas. The search has centred largely on the city’s waterways, including Winnipeg Police divers who combed the Assiniboine River Friday.
Police say she was the last person with the children, and is considered a "person of interest" in the case. She was recently diagnosed with postpartum depression.
