Bombers' Vega named defensive player of week

Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Jason Vega is the Gibson's Finest CFL defensive player of the week, the league announced Tuesday.

Vega, in his first season with the Blue and Gold, had four tackles and two quarterback sacks in Winnipeg's 26-25 win over the Montreal Alouettes Saturday afternoon.

Vega has seven sacks this season, tied for fifth among the league leaders.

The Bombers defence smothered the Montreal offence in the contest, earning six total sacks and picking off three Anthony Calvillo passes. With the win, Winnipeg moved ahead of the Als for first place (based on winning the season series over Montreal) in the East division.

Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray picked up offensive player honours, while teammate RB Jerome Messam earned top Canadian. Hamilton kicker Justin Medlock was named special teams player of the week.

The Bombers also made some minor roster moves Tuesday.

The club released import defensive end Quentin Davie and import defensive back Leslie Majors from the practice roster. Winnipeg also parted ways with Tim Brown, who couldn't secure the kick returner position after given a chance earlier in the season.
