Bombers could choose new boss by Friday

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers could have a new football boss in place by Friday.

The selection committee assigned the task of finding the vice president of football operations – Paul Robson, Joe Poplawski, Gene Dunn and Bill Watchorn - will meet with the 11-member Bomber board of directors late Thursday afternoon and if their recommendation is approved an announcement will come within 24 hours of that consensus being reached.

Some websites are reporting the Bombers have already chosen Joe Mack, the club’s director of player personnel from 1984-87 before embarking on a career in the NFL, and he remains in the city.

Jim Barker, the Calgary Stampeder executive who was one of the two finalists for the job, left Winnipeg on Thursday.

But when pressed on whether the club was prepared to confirm that Mack would be chosen, Bomber interim president/CEO Jim Bell said: "I don’t know that. If I was to tell you that I couldn’t look you in the eye afterward because I don’t know the answer yet."

The announcement of a new head coach should follow the VP of football operations, perhaps as early as next week, with the new president and CEO to be introduced within the next few weeks.
