Bombers release Williams & Williams
WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to make headlines this week and now have cut two veteran players: defensive tackle Tyrone Williams and quarterback Richie Williams.
Neither move is all that surprising, but come in a week in which new QB Michael Bishop arrived and has apparently unseated starter Stefan LeFors and head coach Mike Kelly was fined $1,000 by the Canadian Football League for verbally abusing officials in last Friday's 19-5 loss to the Toronto Argonauts.
Tyrone Williams, 36, was signed by the Bombers in the winter following his release by the B.C. Lions and was originally pencilled in to line up beside Doug Brown to give the club a formidable force in the interior of the defensive line. But the play of fresh-faced Dorian Smith — 13 years Williams' junior and tied for the CFL lead with five sacks — prompted the move.
And the release of Richie Williams was hardly a shocker with the arrival of Bishop on Sunday. The former Hamilton Tiger-Cat was signed this June but was third on the depth chart behind LeFors and Bryan Randall. He only saw limited action with the Bombers this year, coming off the bench in the loss to Toronto to complete just three of 10 passes for 30 yards.
