Border Crossings named Manitoba magazine of year

A prestigious arts quarterly has been named Manitoba's magazine of the year.

Border Crossings was given the honour at the second annual Maggie Awards Thursday night at Inn at the Forks.

A dinner and awards presentation, organized by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association, were held in conjunction with the MMPA's annual professional development conference.

A panel of five judges selected winners in 15 categories. About 40 magazines submitted 120 entries.

The People's Choice Award went to Hearts of the Country, a bimonthly celebrating rural women published by Cindy McKay in Fisher Branch.

Border Crossings, edited by Winnipegger Meeka Walsh, specializes in rarefied articles and interviews about contemporary Canadian and international art and culture.

The 28-year-old publication has won some 60 medals at the Canadian and Western Canadian magazine awards.

Last year's inaugural Maggie for best magazine went to The Beaver, which recently changed its name to Canada's History.

The MMPA boasts about 28 members. An estimated 300 magazines are published in Manitoba, though not all are MMPA members.
