A 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital following a suspected hockey-related assault that happened off-ice at the Southdale Community Centre Sunday afternoon, Winnipeg police say.
The incident sent a number of general patrol officers to the Lakewood Boulevard facility just before 2 p.m., police said.
It appears to involve a hockey game in some way, but police couldn't immediately disclose more yet as the investigation is ongoing and in early stages.
No officer reports on the event have been written yet, said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
"I don't see that anybody has been arrested at this point," he said. The youth was taken to hospital in stable condition, possibly just as a precaution, police said.
Police were interviewing players, possibly a referee and parents to determine what had actually taken place. The suspected assault did not occur on the ice, police said.
Southdale management or staff could not be immediately reached for comment. The Free Press has also requested comment from board president Todd Thornton.
Southdale's online schedule states the Southeast Aboriginal Tourney was to wrap up today after getting underway Friday.
Michalyshen said more information may be available Monday.
