Burke wants Bombers' offence to match defence's skill

  • Print

As the Bombers’ Saturday tilt against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats nears, head coach Tim Burke said his squad is still riding high after last week’s win over the Montreal Alouettes.

"We really got better as a team last week," Burke said, after the Bombers wrapped practice at Investors Group Stadium on Wednesday. "Hopefully we can make that same sort of transition (this week)… Once you win, then you feel like, ‘Hey, we can win.’ There is that confidence, yeah."

The Montreal game was a showcase for Burke’s hungry defence, which rammed Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo with seven sacks. Now, Burke said the offence must make the same jump.

"Offensively, I feel pretty good about the direction we’re heading," Burke said. "We’re working to achieve perfection, but we haven’t achieved it yet. Once we achieve it, then I’ll feel a whole lot better."

On the injury front, defensive back Johnny Sears is "very close" to a return, Burke said, and will have a spot waiting for him at dimeback as soon as he says he’s ready to get back on the field.

Slotback Kito Poblah remains week-to-week with an injury, and it’s not clear when he might return.

Defensive end Alex Hall stayed out of practice Wednesday to heal up some bumps and bruises, but is expected to be back in practice on Thursday and is slated to play on Saturday.
