Bystanders help security guard being beaten by grocery thieves

Bystanders came to the aid of a security guard  Monday night who was being beaten by two people he had stopped after they left a store in the 400 block of River Avenue without paying for a cart of groceries. The guard received injuries to his upper body, police said.

When the officer approached the pair they began to physically assault the 21-year-old man. During the altercation, the officer began calling for help which was heard by several bystanders who came to his aid, police said.

Two suspects were arrested. A male and female both 34, are facing a charge of robbery with violence.

Police said they recovered the stolen property.

The suspects were released on a promise to appear.
