CBC’s Over the Rainbow searching for a Dorothy

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh, why can’t ... you?

For some aspiring song-and-dance performers, a musical trip down the mythical Yellow Brick Road could begin just off the corner of Portage and Main.

The national casting tour for the upcoming CBC-TV reality series Over the Rainbow — which will search for a fresh-faced star for the Toronto production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz — will stop in Winnipeg at The Fairmont on Monday, June 4.

"We’re looking for a fresh new star in the making, and Canadians will play a key role in helping us find our Dorothy," producer David Mirvish said in a network press release.

"The new Dorothy must be able to not only sing, act and dance at a high level, but also have the charisma and presence to carry a marquee production on one of the country’s largest stages night after night."

The series is scheduled to air this fall on CBC-TV. The new production of The Wizard of Oz will open in December at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto.

Wannabe Dorothys are required to prepare a rendition of Over the Rainbow plus one other song of their choice for the tryout. Full audition details are available at www.cbc.ca/overtherainbow.
