Cadets credited with catching smash-and-grab suspect

Alert Winnipeg Police cadets are being credited with helping snag a man accused of breaking into a car.

Cadets and officers responded to a call about a man being spotted smashing the window of a car parked downtown and grabbing an electronic device and other items before running, police said Saturday.

The cadets found the suspect and called police, who took him into custody near the 100 block of Smith Street.

Police said the suspect was found with break-in tools.

While being arrested, the suspect allegedly threatened two police officers.

Neal Baptiste, 35, has been charged with possessing stolen property, possessing break-in instruments, and two counts of uttering threats to kill or cause bodily harm.

He has been detained in the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
