Canadian killed in Munich was from Winnipeg

A Canadian tourist killed by a tram in Munich during Oktoberfest Saturday night has been identified by family as Les Mulholland, 26, of Winnipeg.

"We just wished him well Thursday," said his sister Iris Murray in Thompson, where her brother grew up. "They were there for Oktoberfest," she said. Her brother, a jail guard, was travelling with a buddy.

"They were on a three-week tour," she said. They were travelling to Ireland and Scotland as well, she said.

His parents are devastated.

What’s made their family feel even worse is a story in the German press reporting that he was intoxicated and stumbled into the path of a train.

"That’s inaccurate," said Murray. "Hundreds of people were there" for the annual festival, and on the streets next to the rail lines running through Munich without barriers herding pedestrians away from trains. Her brother was unfamiliar with the motor vehicle system there, she said.

"It was simply an accident." An autopsy was to be performed Tuesday, said Murray. "That’s all we know."

The Department of Foreign Affairs is keeping the family informed of the investigation, she said.
