Canadians, Americans gather at Peace Garden for 9/11 ceremony

INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDEN - About 400 Canadians and Americans joined together in solidarity today at the International Peace Garden along the Canada-U.S. border south of Boissevain to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Under a cloudless sky, frefighters from across Manitoba and south of the border, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Mounties in their ceremonial red uniforms and North Dakota and Manitoba politicians came to pay their respects to the nearly 3,000 people who died that day.

"It was not only an attack on people, it was an attack on a way of life - an attack on a democratic set of institutions and an open society," Premier Greg Selinger said in his speech.

Behind the speaker's podium were steel girders from the World Trade Center towers, which were demolished by terrorists using jet planes as bombs on Sept. 11, 2001.

Other speakers at the event included Al Yaeger, North Dakota's secretary of state, Alex Forrest, president of the Manitoba Professional Firefighters Association, and Maj.-Gen. Alain Parent, commander, 1 Canadian Air Division.

Selinger laid one of four wreaths at the 9/11 memorial at the Peace Garden.
