Cangene seeks H1N1 flu victims for research

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg-based pharmaceutical company Cangene is looking for what’s in some people to give to fight the H1N1 flu.

Cangene is looking for people who contracted H1N1 earlier this year and recovered from it to take part in a study aimed a creating a new treatment for it.

Dr. Anand Kumar said he asked Cangene to look for a treatment after seeing 40 patients hooked to ventilators earlier this year and there was little he could do.

"We had 40 people battling for their lives," Kumar said. "It would have been nice to have this treatment."

As of Aug. 24, Manitoba had recorded 886 confirmed cases of H1N1 with seven fatalities.

The blood will be taken at the Rh Plasma Centre in the Medical Arts Building at 818-233 Kennedy St.

The study is looking for people at least 18 years of age, in good health, weigh at least 110 lbs., and pass a health history screening.

Compensation will be paid to qualified participants.
