Carberry farm fined $48K for workplace accident

A Carberry company has been fined $48,050 for a 2010 accident that saw a 15-year-old worker injured in a conveyor belt.

The province said today ShellMark Farms was fined after it was shown it failed to provide a system for workers to safely access either side of the conveyor belt.

On Sept. 18, 2010 the girl tried to straddle a moving conveyor belt and fell. The belt pulled the worker under a metal brace for the conveyor's electric motor, leading to a number of broken bones and internal injuries.

The company pleaded guilty June 28 to charges under section 4(1)(A) of the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act.

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health investigates workplace accidents and can recommend prosecution if it’s determined the employer did not have appropriate safeguards in place or employees had not been properly trained.
