Charges laid after drugs found in baggage car at train station

Police have arrested two men from Ontario after a drug bust at the Via Rail station on Main Street.

The bust happened Thursday at about 10:35 p.m., after police received a tip. Officers from the street crime and K-9 units found two large suitcases, containing about 50 pounds of marijuana, in the baggage car of the east-bound train.

Police arrested two suspects on the train alleged to be in control of the marijuana, which has an estimated street value of about $150,000.

Police also seized about $2,400 in cash.

Staff Sgt. Max Waddell, head of the street crimes unit, said illicit drugs aren’t often transported by passenger train.

Waddell said police are trying to determine where the marijuana originated and where it was destined.

Waddell said it’s not known what role the two arrested men have in the drug trade.

Allan Norman Caswell, 24, and Christopher Mario Mazzuca, 22, are now charged with trafficking in controlled drug or substance, possessing a substance for the purpose of trafficking, and possessing proceeds of crime.

Both men remain in custody.
