'Power of newspapers' webcast presented

Suzanne Raitt, the vice-president of marketing and innovation from Newspapers Canada, hosted a live webcast from the Free Press News Café this morning.

Raitt discussed the power and effectiveness of newspapers as well as their websites, mobile and tablet apps, highlighting research and examples of how newspapers are currently being used in Canada and around the world.

Newspapers Canada helps newspaper professionals and members of the public stay informed about the industry. Raitt said print newspaper readership in Canada has grown by four per cent since 2007, and there are more daily and community papers circulating the country today than there were in 1970.

"I think people think newspapers are closing. Actually, they’re opening," Raitt said at a second presentation Thursday at the Free Press offices.

While Canadians are accessing news through media other than physical papers, she said, print is not calling it quits. One in five Canadian adults buy a newspaper each day.

"Tablet devices complement traditional media," said Raitt. "They do not replace it."
