  • Print

Two young players are in the spotlight as the Manitoban athletes of the week.

Vincent Massey senior Helen Cheung was named the Home Run Sports Urban High School Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, after she and partner Cora Sang captured the gold medal at the College Louis Riel Invitational badminton tournament last weekend.

Not only is Cheung the provincial defending girls doubles champion, but she maintains a 94 per cent average in her academic studies.

Outside the city, Ross L. Gray Raiders boys basketball post Matthew Brown earned the Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week honour. Brown, a multi-sport athlete who keeps a 90 per cent average in Grade 12, led his team to the provincial A basketball championship.

Over the season, he averaged 23 points, eight assists and nine rebounds per game.
