Chez Sophie will replace Salisbury House on the bridge and the restaurant's lease begins April 1.

The city has approved a five-year lease agreement which will see Chez Sophie become the new restaurant on Esplanade Riel.

This morning, council's downtown development committee unanimously approved the deal, which does not require further approval by executive policy committee or city council. Chez Sophie will replace Salisbury House on the bridge and the restaurant's lease begins April 1.

Coun. Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge) said she thinks the French restaurant fits in with the original vision for the bridge.

"I just can't think of anything more perfect," Gerbasi said.

City property director Barry Thorgrimson said the department will be contacting the owners of Chez Sophie to pass along the good news. He said the city will then make arrangements for Salisbury House to remove its equipment so the new tenants can move into the space.

"I understand in talking with our real estate people that they're quite excited, and they're really looking forward to getting going," Thorgrimson said.

Chez Sophie has operated on Avenue de la Cathedrale since 2005. It is operated by Stephane and Sophie Wild, who are from France's Alsace region.
