Chiefs protest walleye ban today

A number of First Nations chiefs are protesting the fishing moratorium on Turtle River and Valley River with what is described as a ceremonial fishing protest today.

Chiefs from Treaty 2, Treaty 4 and the West Region Tribal Council were expected to protest at sunrise today at Turtle River, crossing provincial Hwy. 5 at Ste. Rose du Lac.

On Thursday the province announced a temporary fishing ban for walleye on the Turtle and Valley rivers between April 20 and May 3, saying the ban would help keep walleye populations healthy in future.
