City abounds with Earth Day events

Things are going green in Winnipeg today, Earth Day, starting with Premier Gary Doer talking about parks.

  • At 9 a.m., Doer, James Richardson, chairman of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Manitoba Region, and Vivian Thompson, Friends of Old Pinawa Dam will be on the east lawn of the Legislature Building to talk about provincial park expansion and investments in the province’s protected areas.
  • As that announcement begins, about 250 Manitoba estheticians and stylists from Aveda salons in Manitoba will set off on a walk from the Legislature. They will walk five kilometres — one less than the average woman in Africa walks daily to get clean drinking water — as part of the 2009 Walk for Water, an organization dedicated to helping the world’s poorest people gain access to clean water. Essentique Spa Salon has set a fundraising goal of $1,800.
  • Urbanminers will be accepting electronic waste at its new facility at 72 Rothwell Rd.
  • At 12 p.m., Greenkids will present the play Palais Oops: A Green Pantomime at Portage Place’s Edmonton Court. The event is sponsored by CTV, Portage Place and Greenkids, a children’s theatre group that educates children about the positive changes they can make to the environment. CTV will also distribute environmentally sound bags in exchange for plastic bags.
  • CAA will accept batteries for disposal or recycling from 12 p.m. at: CAA Fleet Centre, 220 Dawson Rd., N.; until 4 p.m. at CAA Immobilizer Centre, 745 King Edward St.; and until 6 p.m. at Sentinel Self Storage’s two locations, 11 Paramount Rd. and 3101 Pembina Hwy.
  • From 1:30 to 4 p.m., everyone is welcome to help pick up litter and clean up the downtown with Downtown BIZ staff starting at Air Canada Park at 355 Portage Ave.
  • At 3 p.m., Mayor Sam Katz, Dorothy Dobbie, chairwoman of Tree Canada, and representatives from The Forks and Manitoba Lotteries Corp. will plant a tree at Buskers Lookout at the Forks.
